After fake eggs , fake rice , now the spotlight turns on the fake red onion now sneaking its way and circulated freely in the Indonesian produce markets.
Police moved to secure 670 tons of fake onions packaged in 25 large containers and entered through the city of Medan, North Sumatra. The fake red onions transported in large sacks are planned to be distributed to all parts of Indonesia, including Sumatra, Java and Bali, and then mixed with local onions according to Beritagar.
Although it is called "fake", the onion is not made of plastic or other material. It is still a plant of a layer of tuber, but not a shallot as we know it. The onion is a mid-flavored "onion" from India.
Deputy Director of Criminal and Special Economic Crimes, Commissioner Daniel TM Silitonga revealed the reason why the onion can enter Indonesia. "The reason is that small red onion from India is very cheap but when substituted for local onions can be sold in Indonesia at a very high price," Daniel told media crew at the confiscation site, in Gudang Jala Letjen Sujono 168 Medan, North Sumatra, on Monday (25/6/2018).
Indeed, the price of onion in the market had soared ahead of Lebaran (Idul Fitri). Per kilogram on average this imposter onion can reach Rp40,000, while the price of mini bombai in India ranges from Rp2.500 per kilogram, even after adding shipping costs and others, the cost of the landed goods in Indonesia is around Rp6.000 per kilogram.... leaving a very handy profit for smugglers and dodgy wholesale marketers.
Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, requested that traders not sell the mini onions. He also advised consumers to be more careful when buying and not easily tempted a cheap price.
"If you find a small red onion, immediately report it to the Food Satgas or the authorities to follow up on," Amran said.
How to recognize fake onion
The onion ( Allium cepa var. Aggregatum ) is visibly recognizable. However, the invasion of the mini onion ( Allium cepa Linnaeus ) simply makes for confusion and doubt, however, there is an easy way to distinguish between them. For example by recognizing the color. Mini onion has a lighter purplish red color than the more pale-looking local product. If the split horizontally, local red onions will look to have a couple of cloves of bulbs in it. While like ordinary onion, onion mini bombai have one clove only.
Red onion imported either small to large size has a higher water content while the onion has a more dense and dry texture. If cooked, local onion was able to produce a much more fragrant aroma than mini onion.
